About OSU & Stillwater

Oklahoma State University is an intricately woven piece of the Stillwater community. Describing one without mention of the other would not do justice to the unique combination that makes our town.

As a modern land-grant institution with more than 35,000 students across a five-campus system in Stillwater, Tulsa, Oklahoma City and Okmulgee, Oklahoma State University has graduated more than 264,000 students to serve the state of Oklahoma, the nation and the world. Founded in 1890 as Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College, OSU's land-grant mission is to make a college education more accessible, educate the next generation, conduct cutting-edge research and provide service to communities. Our roots are set in a rich tradition, and our actions are guided by the Cowboy Code.

Across campus and the Stillwater community, you’ll see OSU’s signature bright orange color, along with the Cowboys’ mascot, Pistol Pete, proudly on display. The pride and passion that Stillwater residents feel for OSU are just two of the many things that make our community special.

Located in the middle of two Oklahoma metropolitan areas, Stillwater is a one-hour drive from both Tulsa and Oklahoma City. The proximity to the two cities invites Stillwater residents to explore the vastly different offerings of each. Repeatedly praised for being one of the best small towns in America and even dubbed “America's Friendliest College Town,” Stillwater is a great place to be.

From the performing arts to world-class athletics and agricultural activities, Stillwater has it all. The McKnight Center for the Performing Arts at OSU is a world-class epicenter for the arts that opened in 2019 and has hosted the likes of The New York Philharmonic, Garth Brooks, Kristin Chenoweth and many other world-renowned performers. As a Big 12 Conference community, Stillwater also witnesses incredible athletes in competition throughout the year. As a result of a history rich in agriculture, Stillwater hosts state, regional and national livestock shows and sales throughout the year. The Payne County Expo Center is also the home of events including the Payne County Free Fair, Oklahoma State University Cowboy Stampede Rodeo, and arts and crafts shows.
