Can you describe what it was like reconnecting with your biological family and the community in Sierra Leone after discovering your royal status?
Reconnecting with my biological family and the community in Sierra Leone was a deeply emotional and transformative experience. It was a mix of joy, discovery and a profound sense of belonging. When meeting my father and other family members for the first time, I felt an immediate connection and love that transcended the years we had been apart. The community welcomed me with open arms, and their warmth and generosity deeply moved me. Understanding my royal status added another layer of responsibility and commitment to serve and uplift my community.
How has your understanding of cultural identity and belonging evolved through your personal journey?
My understanding of cultural identity and belonging has evolved significantly through my personal journey. Initially, my sense of identity was shaped by my upbringing in the United States as an adoptee. Discovering my heritage and royal lineage in Sierra Leone expanded my perspective, teaching me the importance of embracing all aspects of my identity. I’ve learned that belonging is not just about where you are born or raised but also about the connections you build and the impact you have on your communities. This journey has helped me appreciate the richness of diverse cultural experiences and the strength that comes from understanding and integrating them.
What are some of the specific challenges that Sierra Leone faces, and how does your philanthropic work aim to address them?
Sierra Leone faces several challenges, including poverty, limited access to education, healthcare issues and the aftermath of a brutal civil war. My philanthropic work through Sierra Leone Rising aims to address these challenges by focusing on education, health and community development. We work to improve school facilities, provide scholarships, support healthcare initiatives and promote sustainable development projects. We aim to create lasting positive change and improve the overall quality of life by empowering the local community with the tools and resources they need.
How has philanthropy influenced your life?
Philanthropy has profoundly influenced my life by providing me with a sense of purpose and fulfillment. It has allowed me to connect with people from diverse backgrounds and work towards common goals of improving lives and creating opportunities. Engaging in philanthropic activities has taught me the value of empathy, compassion and collective effort. It has also given me the opportunity to honor my heritage and contribute to the well-being of my ancestral community, which is incredibly rewarding.
What challenges do women and girls in Sierra Leone face, and how is your work centered around addressing them?
Women and girls in Sierra Leone face numerous challenges, including limited access to education, early marriage, gender-based violence and economic inequality. My work is centered around addressing these issues by promoting gender equality and empowering women and girls. Through Sierra Leone Rising, we support initiatives that provide educational opportunities, raise awareness about women's rights and create safe spaces for women and girls to thrive. By investing in their education and development, we aim to break the cycle of poverty and create a more equitable society.
What have been some of the most rewarding experiences or lessons you’ve learned since discovering your royal status?
Some of the most rewarding experiences since discovering my royal status include the deep connections I’ve built with my family and community in Sierra Leone, the impact of our philanthropic projects and the opportunity to advocate for important causes on a global stage. I’ve learned the importance of resilience, humility, and the power of community. These experiences reinforce my belief in the potential for positive change when people come together with a shared vision and commitment.
How can people from different cultural backgrounds contribute to and support efforts to promote gender equality and empowerment in Sierra Leone?
People from different cultural backgrounds can contribute to and support efforts to promote gender equality and empowerment in Sierra Leone by raising awareness, advocating for policies that support women's rights and providing financial support to initiatives focusing on these issues. Volunteering time and skills, partnering with local organizations and sharing knowledge and resources can also make a significant impact. It’s crucial to approach these efforts with cultural sensitivity and a willingness to listen and learn from the local communities to ensure that the support provided is respectful and effective.
