The Women for OSU annual spring symposium is a unique opportunity to gather in Stillwater and gain valuable knowledge about philanthropic decision making and leadership. Women for OSU celebrates members of the OSU family who display leadership in philanthropy by naming the Philanthropist of the Year and awarding scholarships to outstanding OSU students.

Spring 2017 Symposium: Recap

It was a yet another record-setting year at the 2017 Women for OSU Symposium.
The Symposium saw another sold-out crowd, with the largest number of attendees in our nine-year history. More than 3,000 people have attended a Women for OSU event.

Take a look back at aspiring reporter and Miss OSU Julia Benbrook’s coverage of the 2017 Women for OSU Symposium.

Linda Cline

Linda Cline

We honored Linda Cline as our 2017 Philanthropist of the Year.

Neither Linda nor her late husband Charles Cline attended OSU, but they credit much of their success to the faculty’s willingness to visit the ranch, working with and teaching them. They fell in love with the institution where their daughter, Amy, earned a journalism degree and their son, Cary, sent his two daughters.

With OSU helping Char-Lin Ranch establish such a successful beginning, the Clines immediately started helping the equine program. Along with donations, they opened their ranch to student tours and hired countless OSU students. They also allowed the Department of Animal Science to use their animals for teaching opportunities, judging team practice, clinics and contests. They even donated several world-class horses to improve the genetics of OSU’s teaching herd and endowed a professorship.

In 2014, Linda made a major gift to fund the state-of-the-art Charles and Linda Cline Equine Teaching Center. It includes a teaching barn with stalls for foaling mares, a small indoor arena, classroom, conference room, feed and tack room, a wash rack, treatment area and offices. OSU Extension Services can host workshops and learning opportunities for students, 4-H clubs and FFA chapters, as well as the general public.

Linda was recognized by OSU with two major awards in 2015. The Department of Animal Science presented her the Distinguished Service Award, and she was named a DASNR Champion.

Joan Lunden

Joan Lunden

This year’s keynote speaker was award-winning journalist, Joan Lunden.

Joan Lunden shared how much has changed for women over the past 50 years, especially for women in the workforce and in the home. Joan speaks on how women take on their new roles that they have fought for, while still juggling being a mother and managing family life. Joan also shared her personal career story, and what she has learned from some of the most successful people in the world and share their common traits as well as the importance of finding your passion and leaving a legacy.

With her career focused on health, wellness, and inspiration, Lunden has continued to be a reassuring and informative presence in American homes for more than 30 years. In June of 2014, Lunden was diagnosed with Triple-Negative Breast Cancer, which required chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation. Lunden made a decision to take her battle public and has since shared her journey through cancer treatment with the world, becoming a prominent voice in the breast cancer community.

An eternal optimist, Lunden decided to turn her diagnosis into an opportunity to help others in the breast cancer community. From her consistent journaling throughout her breast cancer journey, Lunden wrote a book entitled Had I Known, which documents her battle with cancer as well as takes a reflective look back on her life and career. Every day, women visit Lunden’s website, JoanLunden.com for helpful information about cancer, health, wellness, lifestyle tips, family and boomer information.

It was an exciting year for the Women for OSU. If you are looking to be involved or would like to become a sponsor for the 2018 Symposium, contact Mandy Heaps.
