OSUF Gallery Exhibit Documents Chisholm Trail: Past and Present
Photographer’s journey on the Chisholm Trail to showcase at the Malinda Berry Fischer Gallery

The Oklahoma State University (OSU) Foundation welcomes OSU alumnus, Shane Brown, who will showcase a series of 20 photographs from the present day Chisholm Trail at the OSU Foundation now through July.

The opening reception for Brown’s “Oklahoma and the Chisholm Trail: Photographs by Shane Brown” exhibit is April 10 from 5:30-7 p.m. in the Malinda Berry Fischer Gallery at the foundation and is free and open to the public.

Brown chronicled the Chisholm Trail for Oklahoma Today’s centennial issue. The photographs capture a present-day cattle drive while documenting what is left of the Chisholm Trail.

“It’s an amalgamation of where it was, what remains of the original trail and what is there today,” Brown said of his photographic journey on the historic trail.

To authenticate the experience and capture the true essence of the trail, Brown spent one day on horseback photographing a cattle drive with a group of cowboys commemorating the trail.

“These cowboys are trying to maintain the sense of history and accuracy,” Brown said.

Brown says he has always been interested in photography; always taking snapshots. His interest really developed while stationed in South Korea with the military where he bought his first 35mm camera.

Brown finished his associate’s degree in applied science in photography from OSU-Okmulgee in 2001. He then proceeded to get a degree in liberal studies with an emphasis on English and sociology from OSU-Stillwater. He is currently working on his Master of Fine Arts in photography.

The Skiatook native says he has moved around, but keeps coming back to Oklahoma because he loves it here and is happy to be showing at OSU.

“I think back to my time in Stillwater fondly, it’s where my heart is,” Brown said.

Named in honor of the Foundation’s former board chairman, the Malinda Berry Fischer Gallery showcases Oklahoma and OSU artists. The gallery serves to strengthen the connection between Oklahoma State University and the OSU Foundation. The gallery is open Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
