Matthew Wilson. Wilson pursues a degree in math education thanks to the Clevelands’ support.
For Kendra Guynes of Altus, Okla., a gift from complete strangers opened the door to a lifelong dream of becoming one of the state’s top electrical engineers. “The ability to attend school and focus purely on my studies without holding down a full-time job and worrying about finances is a tremendous relief, and the generosity of this scholarship will be a huge enabler of my future success.”
Horace & Norma Cleveland never met the many students they have helped succeed at OSU. Nor will they meet the countless students they have yet to assist in achieving their dreams. But their impact is far-reaching.
The late Horace and Norma Cleveland of San Antonio, Texas bequested nearly $1 million for student scholarships through an estate gift upon their passing in late 2003. While the gift provides immediate support to OSU’s top scholars, the endowment impact is substantial as it will continue to grow and infinitely support generations of future Cowboys.
A generous benefactor and active philanthropist, Horace Cleveland graduated from OSU’s Spears School of Business in 1929, and became a pioneer of innovation while working for the Social Security Administration. Horace and Norma, a retired naval nurse, recognized the financial need of many students, and later in life graciously agreed to support to the University and its students through an estate gift.
“Planned gifts, such as the Clevelands’, provide a fairly easy and inexpensive way for individuals to truly make a difference at OSU. We are so grateful to the Clevelands for having the generosity and forethought to include OSU in their estate plans,” remarked Keri Williams, OSU Foundation Gift Planning Director.
The $980,000 gift will provide funding for nearly 20 students to receive the prestigious President’s Distinguished Scholarship (PDS) annually beginning fall 2006.
The President's Distinguished Scholarship, one of OSU’s most highly desired undergraduate scholarships, is a four-year $2,200 per year scholarship funding tuition and books for aspiring scholars. Students are selected based upon exemplary academic, leadership and community accomplishments.
Kirk Jewell, President and CEO of the OSU Foundation noted, “OSU strives to be the university of choice for top students, and we understand that scholarship opportunities are a critical factor in attracting leading scholars. We greatly appreciate the resources that the Cleveland bequest will create to support our premier students now and for years to come. ”
